Thanksgiving

November 26, 2006

The boys really enjoyed Thanksgiving this year. They ate turkey and mashed potatoes. Andrew has decided that everything needs sauce–he liked the cranberry sauce, but he’s also big on ketchup and mustard. Andrew ate half of a piece of pumpkin pie all by himself!

The boys have a ton of new words. They have started signing “Baby” and “Please”, although they also say baby. Other new words: bowl, comb, lid / top (pronounced “pop”), hat, coat, brrrr (together with cold–they also shiver when they say this), two (they like this word), plate (comes out as popo), and pillow (also popo–context is important ;-) ).

They are now very good at asking for bottles and telling us whether they want water (signed) or milk (spoken). Last night I was fixing Owen a bottle and I asked Andrew if he wanted some milk. He signed back milk and drink.

Owen likes to take both bottles and give one to Andrew. Andrew helped me clean up a cracker the other day. I held out my hand, but instead of giving me the cracker, he wanted to throw it away himself.

Andrew has been wearing his fire hat a lot recently.

Halloween

November 5, 2006

Halloween was fun. The boys were a little uncertain at first, but they quickly figured it out. They would go up to a house, knock or ring the doorbell, sometimes say “hi” (trick or treat is still a little beyond them), say thank you, and wave bye-bye.

Andrew went as a fireman, and Owen went as a knight in shining nylon. By our house, the weather was cold and windy, but by Jeff and Kathy’s it was much warmer and no wind.

Owen wanted to be carried most of the night, but Andrew walked a good portion. Owen wouldn’t let anyone else carry his plastic pumpkin, but Andrew was indifferent. At one house, Owen said, “Daddy” and took a piece of candy, then said “Mommy” and took another piece of candy, then said “Daddy” again and took a third piece.

Owen has still been waking up every night. We think it might be growing pains. He has grown at least 3/4″ in the past 6-8 weeks. He is catching up to Andrew in height, and he may have put on another pound or two. We think Andrew is about the same height, at least as far as we could tell with our attempts at measuring him. However, he has definitely gained a few pounds–we think he may be up to 35 lbs. now.

Andrew has mostly been sleeping through the night, though he did get up last night, and then he woke up this morning at 5 AM. Not behavior we want to encourage.

The kids keep learning new words. Some of the latest are: “tire”, “milk” (spoken now, used to be a sign), “mac” for mac ‘n cheese, and “nap” for napkin. Andrew keeps pointing at the sky at night and saying “moon”. I’ve been telling him, “The moon is up there above the clouds,” because it’s been rainy / overcast a lot recently.

Nancy took the boys to visit a fire station last week, before Halloween.
